Kerava in a nutshell Print

Image
People originally lived in Kerava over 8,000 years ago and it became a permanent settlement in the 15th century. Kerava’s development was stimulated by completion of the Helsinki-Hämeenlinna railway line in 1862. The railway was the start of Kerava’s industrialisation and rapid growth in population. Kerava officially became a market town in 1924 and a city in 1970.

The city covers an area of 30.9 km2, of which 0.1 km2 is water. Kerava is a green city, in which zoning allocates almost 300 hectares of park and green areas – or 88 square metres of park per resident. Green parks and proximity to unspoilt countryside are prominent features in Kerava. The city also contains numerous pedestrian walkways and cycle paths.
